Karolina Muchová denied Coco Gauff a place in the Wimbledon final after Gauff failed to convert match point in a dramatic Centre Court semifinal. According to ABC News, the crucial moment came at 9-8 in the third-set match tiebreak when Gauff, who had a simple forehand opportunity, instead played a drop shot that hit the net.
Muchová recovered from that miss to prevail 6-2 1-6 7-6 (12-10) after a sunshine-laden match decided by a 12-10 match tiebreak. Gauff reflected on the error: “People who don’t watch tennis are going to be like, ‘Why did you do that?'” and added, “I just panicked a little bit.” The 22-year-old had been on the verge of making the final for the first time since she arrived at the All England Club as a 15-year-old sensation.
With Linda Nosková downing Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk 6-4, 6-4 in the other semifinal, Wimbledon will stage its first all-Czech final in the tournament’s 149-year history. The match-up guarantees the Czech Republic a third women’s SW19 champion in four years and follows the men’s last all-Czech slam final at the 1989 Australian Open.
Muchová, 29, reached her second grand slam final despite struggling physically late in the match with an abdomen problem. She held firm as temperatures again soared at the All England Club, and the win comes after she lost to Iga Świątek in the 2023 French Open. The semifinal victory was sealed after Gauff’s second-set comeback had threatened to swing momentum back in the American’s favour.
Nosková, 21 and ranked world No.12, was described in the report as an aggressive power player, contrasting with Muchová, the world No.9, who is called a creative grass-court artist. Nosková recalled earlier Czech success at Wimbledon: “One thing I do remember is when Petra Kvitova won here,” and added, “I’m still in shock that I had the chance to play on this court.” She also praised Muchová: “Karolina, she is such a great fighter, an incredible player, but mainly she’s a great person and I’m glad I get to play my first final with her.”
