Min Aung Hlaing, Myanmar’s coup leader, was sworn in as Myanmar’s president following an election widely condemned as a sham. The election excluded Aung San Suu Kyi, the former democratically elected leader, and was held in only a third of the country. International criticism is mounting as Hlaing’s military is accused of severe human rights violations, including bombing civilians and committing war crimes against the Rohingya.

According to ABC News, analysts suggest that Hlaing’s consolidation of power is more aggressive than that of his predecessors. Htwe Htwe Thein, an associate professor at Curtin University, warns that silence from other countries may lead to a perception of legitimacy for Hlaing’s regime. She emphasizes that while the government may appear civilian, it is essentially a military-led entity.

Reports have surfaced detailing how Hlaing’s family acquired a luxury mansion in Bangkok for approximately 98 million baht ($4.3 million). Investigators claim this purchase may have been structured to evade sanctions. The deal was facilitated by Tun Min Latt, a known associate of the junta, raising concerns about corruption and money laundering linked to the military’s actions.

Despite existing sanctions from the US, UK, and EU against key figures in Hlaing’s regime, experts point out that gaps remain, particularly regarding extended family networks. Sean Turnell, a former economic advisor to Aung San Suu Kyi, advocates for stronger sanctions, including targeting Myanmar’s Central Bank, which he identifies as a primary financier of the military’s operations.

Calls for action from the international community are growing, as activists urge a unified stance against the junta to support the people’s will in Myanmar. The situation remains dire as the country continues to grapple with civil unrest and military aggression.
