The United States marked its 250th birthday with a series of events, including fireworks, flyovers, and community gatherings, despite facing extreme weather conditions. According to BBC News, President Donald Trump addressed a crowd at the National Mall in Washington, emphasizing themes of independence and American strength.

The festivities included what is reported to be the largest fireworks display ever in the US. The celebrations were part of a separate initiative called Freedom 250, which faced criticism for being politicized. Trump’s speech touched on various political topics, including the rejection of communism and the right to bear arms, concluding with a hopeful message about America’s future.

The day was marked by soaring temperatures, reaching 100°F (37°C) in many areas, and a thunderstorm that delayed some events. In Washington, guests were advised to seek shelter during the storm, while members of a white nationalist group, Patriot Front, were seen marching through the capital.

In addition to the main celebrations, numerous local events took place across the country as part of the bipartisan America 250 initiative. These included concerts featuring well-known artists and naturalization ceremonies welcoming new citizens. In Philadelphia, a special flyover commemorated the city, known as the birthplace of America, while the annual hot dog-eating contest in New York City saw Joey Chestnut claim his 18th title.

The extreme heat wave impacted celebrations, leading to the cancellation of some events in various states. Power outages affected nearly 750,000 residents due to severe weather conditions. Former presidents also shared messages reflecting on the significance of the milestone, emphasizing the ongoing pursuit of equality and civic engagement in America.
