Netflix has commenced filming its first series set in Western Australia, titled Breakers. The production is taking place in the Shire of Gingin, located 78 kilometres north of Perth, with scenes being shot at the scenic Lancelin Sand Dunes. This initiative marks a significant milestone for the region as it aims to boost local tourism and economic activity. According to ABC News, the series follows two best friends from the United States who go backpacking in Australia, becoming entangled in a community of surfers led by a charismatic but mysterious figure.

The filming is expected to create approximately 100 local jobs and inject an estimated $19 million into the local economy. Gingin’s Community Resource and Visitor Centre manager, Carrie Edwards, expressed optimism that the series would attract more tourists to the area, which has faced challenges in marketing itself as a destination. Edwards highlighted the town’s unique charm and simplicity, noting the need for effective promotion to draw visitors.

The Shire of Gingin has recently achieved Film Friendly certification from Screenwest, joining other local governments in welcoming filmmakers. Gingin Shire President Linda Balcombe emphasized the importance of making the region appealing to filmmakers, which not only supports local businesses but also showcases the area’s diverse landscapes.

Residents are enthusiastic about seeing their town featured on screen, with hopes that this exposure will foster a sense of pride and community engagement. Balcombe noted that the buzz generated by the filming could lead to more opportunities in the future, enhancing the town’s visibility and appeal.
