Eager Hurlstone Park residents have welcomed the opening of the much-anticipated Hurlstone Memorial Reserve Community Centre.
Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour officially opened the $2 million facility on Saturday.
“I’m proud we’ve delivered a beautiful centre that creates an inspiring and inclusive space for not only the residents of Hurlstone Park, but the whole community to enjoy,” Mayor Asfour said.
“I’d also like to share a special thank you to the Trustees of Hurlstone Park Community Centre, who helped fund this amazing new facility.”
The Hurlstone Memorial Reserve Community Centre features:
- A new hireable space for the community to gather;
- A covered outdoor breakout space;
- Kitchenette; and
- Accessible toilet facilities, which can be accessed by the nearby Hurlstone Park Village Centre.
Hurlstone Memorial Reserve has been a popular respite for local residents for many years. It was the home of the former Hurlstone Park Bowling, which was built in 1947, and was transformed into a park in 2017.
Before then, two small creeks once ran down the hill from the Old Canterbury Road ridge, ending in wetlands along the banks of the Cooks River. The Blamire brick pits also operated in the area of the reserve during the 1880’s, using the creek water for brick making.
