Charles Darwin University (CDU) has secured a $70 million loan from the federal government to construct a new 14-storey student accommodation building in Darwin’s Central Business District. This initiative aims to add 400 new beds to the local rental market, addressing the ongoing housing challenges faced by university students.

According to ABC News, the new facility is expected to be completed by 2028, although rental prices for the new accommodations have not yet been disclosed. The project includes the construction of a rental tower that will house 352 students, located directly behind the recently opened Danala campus on Cavenagh Street.

CDU Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Fiona Coulson emphasized the importance of expanding accommodation options to keep pace with the growing student population. In addition to the new tower, existing facilities at CDU’s Casuarina campus will be refurbished to provide an additional 50 beds.

Federal Northern Australia Minister Madeleine King stated that the new accommodation will benefit both local and international students, contributing positively to the community and alleviating pressure on Darwin’s competitive rental market. She noted the significance of international students to the local economy and the crucial role of education in fostering international relations.

Despite the pressing need for affordable housing, the specific rental costs for the new facilities remain uncertain. Professor Coulson mentioned that CDU aims to offer a range of accommodation options to suit different budgets, including various room sizes and amenities. The project is part of a broader strategy to enhance the university’s housing offerings and support its diverse student body.
