A new outdoor theatre in Winton, Queensland, aims to attract tourists as the town faces a significant tourism crisis. The Crackup Sisters, an outback comedy troupe, inaugurated the Dustarena, a venue designed to bring new audiences to the region. According to ABC News, local tourism operators have reported a loss of revenue as high as 90 percent due to low tourist sentiment towards fuel supply issues.

The Dustarena, funded by the state government, is part of efforts to revitalize the local economy. Co-founder Amanda Lyn-Pearson expressed her hope that the venue can provide a unique entertainment experience, stating, “What’s exciting is to give audiences a little bit of theatricalism where they don’t expect it to be.”

Despite the optimism surrounding the new theatre, many local businesses are struggling. Jesse Hitson, who operates a caravan park, noted that his bookings have plummeted, with only four caravans booked per night compared to the usual 40 to 50 during this time of year. He described the situation as potentially catastrophic for local businesses reliant on tourism.

Winton’s mayor, Cathy White, addressed misconceptions about fuel availability, asserting that the town has plenty of fuel. She remains hopeful that as temperatures drop in southern regions, tourists will begin heading north to enjoy the outback. Local tourism officials had anticipated a strong season, but cancellations have hindered those expectations, primarily due to concerns over fuel supply rather than costs.
