Police have scoured a unit block in Hamilton South after a man was fatally stabbed, with investigators conducting an extensive on-site inquiry.

According to ABC News, emergency services were called to a Hassall Street unit block at about 3:30pm and intensive care paramedics treated a man believed to be in his 40s for stab wounds before he was taken to hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

Detectives and officers from the state’s riot and homicide squads, together with local police, searched the building and the front lawn and have undertaken a forensic examination at the scene. Newcastle City Police Superintendent Kylie Endemi said “Those investigators are very much invested in ascertaining what led to the man’s death.” She confirmed an extensive forensic examination was underway and that police were canvassing the area to identify potential witnesses and to obtain CCTV and dash-cam footage that could assist the inquiry.

Superintendent Endemi told reporters the area around the Hassall Street block, including surrounding streets, was busy at the time of the stabbing and that people in the area may have seen relevant information. “There will be people out there that may have seen things that can assist us with that information, or may have footage including dash cam footage,” she said. “We do anticipate that there will be other people that hold information in relation to what transpired and who committed this crime. We would make a plea for them to please contact us.”

Police also emphasised there is no remaining threat to the community and said they had deployed significant resourcing to the investigation and to reassure residents. “There is no threat remaining to the community, and [we] reassure them that our investment in keeping our community and our streets safe continues,” Superintendent Endemi said. She said high-visibility policing operations under the auspice of Operation Confidence and other strategies in the district, particularly in the Hamilton South area, will continue.

What happens next: investigators will continue canvassing for witnesses, seek CCTV and dash-cam footage, and press on with forensic inquiries as they work to determine what led to the man’s death.
