Club Chemistry in Canterbury will remain closed until health officials confirm that the meningitis outbreak is under control. The decision comes after two staff members were hospitalized due to the illness, part of a larger outbreak that has seen 27 suspected or confirmed cases, including two fatalities. According to BBC News, owner Louise Jones-Roberts expressed her commitment to ensuring safety before reopening, citing significant fear and anxiety in the community.

The outbreak has particularly affected the University of Kent, where three cheerleaders have been hospitalized. The UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) is urging anyone who visited Club Chemistry from 5-7 March, along with university students, to seek preventative antibiotics. The strain involved in this outbreak has been meningitis B.

Despite no new deaths being reported after the initial two, local businesses are feeling the impact of the outbreak. Sandy de Rougemont, manager of the House of Agnes hotel, reported a significant drop in bookings, while Sophie Treasden from The Refectory Kitchen noted a drastic decline in customer traffic.

In response to the outbreak, a vaccination program is underway to immunize around 5,000 students at the University of Kent’s Canterbury campus. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with officials remaining cautious about declaring the outbreak contained.
