Reality star Spencer Pratt has lost the race for Los Angeles mayor, with left-wing city council member Nithya Raman advancing to face incumbent Karen Bass in the upcoming general election. According to BBC News, Raman’s win was declared nearly a week after the California primary election.
Raman secured 28.5% of the vote, surpassing Pratt, who garnered 25.8%. The counting process in California, which includes a significant number of mail-in ballots, often takes weeks. This delay has led to complaints from various political figures, including former President Donald Trump, who raised unsubstantiated allegations of fraud.
The mayoral race is crucial for Los Angeles as the city continues to confront pressing issues like homelessness and housing affordability. The winner of the November election will lead the nation’s second most populous city during these challenging times.
Karen Bass, who has a long political history including six terms in Congress, is seeking a second and final term as mayor. Her administration has been marked by her responses to homelessness and significant crises, including a destructive wildfire in January 2025 that resulted in considerable loss of life and property.
Nithya Raman, an urban planner and member of the Democratic Socialists of America, has focused her campaign on expanding affordable housing and addressing homelessness more effectively than her predecessor. Despite being a newcomer to the race, her platform has resonated with many voters looking for change.
