The annual Cumberland Young Champions Awards are back and the community is invited to nominate local young achievers across a variety of fields including academic, the arts, technology, sports and community service.
As the nominations are coming in, some of the stories of accomplishment are gob smacking.
At 16, go karting champ Darcie Batty already has over 100 races and 30 podiums under her suit.12-year-old Sienna Kong has not danced her way to showcases filled with trophies from numerous dance competitions at all levels, but is a budding cello virtuoso and high academic achiever. Delany College has nominated 17-year-old Stella Fitzpatrick for her passion in inspiring the next generation. The Guildford Greystanes Physical Culture Club is celebrating a year of multiple awards at the State and National levels.
Darcie, Sienna, Stella and the GGPC will be among the 100 young people who will be honoured for their achievements and contribution to the local community at the annual Cumberland Young Champions Awards.
The Young Champions Awards was initiated by entrepreneur Brian Laul, Chairperson of Rainbow Crossing Inc., and vice president of the Greater Cumberland Chamber of Commerce, to acknowledge the achievements of our young people under 19 and to celebrate the contributions they make to our wider community. It is a one-of- its-kind event in Cumberland.
“It is my hope that these awards will inspire young people of all backgrounds to rise above their difficulties and pursue a journey of excellence”, Mr. Laul said.
“We have so many talented and passionate under-19s creating positive changes and sometimes just a pat on the back, a little appreciation, can make a real difference and give them the determination to go even further.”
The Awards are open to young people under 19 years old living in Cumberland LGA and are spread over 20 categories including individual, group and special. The winners will be announced at the Gala Awards High Tea on Sunday 7 July at Merrylands RSL when the community will come together as one to celebrate our future leaders.
Nominations for the Cumberland Young Champions Awards have been extended and now close on Saturday 15th June, so it still isn’t too late for you to nominate your own child or any young person you know in our community.
