According to BBC News, Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill believes the association’s youth pathway is helping players reach senior international football and revive Premier League ambitions. Shea Charles and Isaac Price first represented a Club NI side against Leeds United’s Under-16s in York in 2018, alongside players including Conor Bradley and Terry Devlin. Both later won senior caps as teenagers under O’Neill and are now regular selections.
Charles, 22, became Northern Ireland’s most expensive footballer in the summer window when he joined Fulham for £30m from Southampton. O’Neill said he recognised Charles’ potential when he first watched him in 2018. The midfielder has won 35 caps since his Northern Ireland debut in March 2023, which came before his first senior and Premier League appearance for Manchester City in May 2023.
O’Neill said Northern Ireland’s development work has two strands: domestic-based players and those brought in through eligibility. Charles and his brother Pierce are eligible through their mother, Mary, who is from Northern Ireland. The manager also highlighted support for players whose club futures are uncertain, pointing to Dan Ballard and Pierce Charles, who were released by Arsenal and Manchester City respectively but remained involved with Northern Ireland youth teams.
The JD Academy, which succeeded Club NI, provides promising young footballers in Northern Ireland with a residential programme at Campbell College, plus international matches, nutrition and strength and conditioning support. O’Neill described the academy’s work as “phenomenal” and said it offers an opportunity at a critical stage of development. Graduates in his current squad include Trai Hume, Bradley, Ethan Galbraith and Ruairi McConville.
International football has also given Charles a benchmark against leading opponents. In the past three years, he has faced Spain’s Rodri, Germany’s Florian Wirtz, Italy’s Sandro Tonali and France midfielders Aurelien Tchouameni and Adrien Rabiot. Charles could make his Fulham debut against Chelsea on Monday, in what would be his second Premier League appearance, three years after his Manchester City debut under Pep Guardiola.
