A Northern Territory police officer fired two rounds during an attempt to stop a vehicle in the Palmerston area, police said. According to ABC News, officers had been responding to reports in Bakewell when the incident unfolded.
Police say they received “multiple reports of a man allegedly armed with a blunt weapon attempting to break into homes” in Bakewell, south-east of Darwin, at about 11.20am. Officers allege the man stole a set of keys to a silver Toyota Corolla parked at a residence in Firefly Court before being intercepted by attending police.
“Attending police officers confronted the [alleged] offender as he entered the vehicle and began to flee from the scene,” the police statement said. When officers confronted the alleged offender as he entered the vehicle, police say the driver began to drive away.
Police can confirm “one officer drew their firearm and allegedly discharged two rounds during the incident in an attempt to stop the vehicle,” the statement said. The wording in the police release places the discharge in the context of an attempt to stop the vehicle as it fled the scene.
The police statement said the vehicle “then continued driving away from the scene before turning up abandoned in bushland off Roystonea Avenue” and that no injuries were reported. The car was later found abandoned in bushland off Roystonea Avenue, and authorities reported there were no injuries connected to the incident.
The Northern Territory Police have declared the use of force a serious custody incident. As the police statement put it, “The use of force has been declared a serious custody incident and will be subject to the appropriate investigative processes with oversight from the Professional Standards Command.” The statement also said “the entire circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation.”
According to the police release, the declared serious custody incident will be investigated through the appropriate investigative processes with oversight from the Professional Standards Command, and the force said the full circumstances of the incident are under investigation.
