Yingiya Guyula, an independent member of the Northern Territory (NT) parliament, has accused both the Country Liberal Party (CLP) and Labor of having “blood on their hands” following the recent death of a 26-year-old man in Milingimbi. According to ABC News, the man died during violence that erupted after a community meeting addressing family group tensions.

The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, with reports of large-scale fighting involving individuals armed with edged weapons. Mr. Guyula criticized successive governments for neglecting local voices and failing to implement community-based solutions to violence, which he believes could help prevent such tragedies.

He emphasized the need for more housing on remote homelands rather than in overcrowded communities like Milingimbi. Mr. Guyula has long advocated for local solutions, including allowing offenders to serve time on their own country, where they can learn respect and discipline from their elders.

NT Treasurer Bill Yan expressed his sorrow over the incident, calling it “absolutely tragic” and urging the community to unite in support of one another. Meanwhile, a Labor spokesperson pointed fingers at the CLP for cutting local safety programs and failing to invest in community-led solutions. The police investigation into the death is ongoing.
