The community of Numbulwar will be evacuated to Darwin as Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle approaches the Northern Territory’s east coast. According to ABC News, about 500 residents are expected to leave in the coming days for their safety.

Cyclone Narelle, currently a category four system, is projected to weaken to a category two as it moves across Queensland before re-intensifying to a category three by Saturday afternoon. The cyclone’s path indicates that Numbulwar, along with Groote Eylandt and Ngukurr, will be among the first areas affected.

Emergency service agency SecureNT has confirmed that the evacuation will be conducted by air, with suitable accommodation arrangements in Darwin already in place. The agency emphasized that this precautionary measure aims to ensure the safety of all residents in the cyclone’s trajectory.

Local authorities are urging residents across the Northern Territory to prepare for the cyclone’s impact. Preparations include readying emergency kits and familiarizing themselves with cyclone shelters. The situation is especially critical for communities like Katherine and Beswick, which recently experienced major flooding.

As the storm approaches, communication and coordination efforts are being ramped up. The Anindilyakwa Land Council has expressed concerns regarding the potential impact on infrastructure and the local economy, highlighting the need for strong communication during this emergency.
