Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif revealed that negotiations between the United States and Iran faced significant challenges before reaching a tentative agreement to end a war lasting over 100 days. According to Al Jazeera, Field Marshal Asim Munir, Pakistan’s military chief, played a crucial role in maintaining momentum during the talks, which were at times on the verge of collapse.

During a session in the National Assembly, Sharif commended Munir for his relentless efforts, stating that his commitment was vital to keeping the negotiations alive. The agreement, announced early on Monday, calls for an immediate and permanent end to military operations across all fronts, including in Lebanon, and is set to be formally signed in Geneva on Friday.

US President Donald Trump confirmed the deal shortly after Sharif’s announcement, stating on his Truth Social platform that the agreement with Iran was complete. The 14-point memorandum of understanding includes provisions for the US to lift its naval blockade of Iran and withdraw forces stationed near the country, with the Strait of Hormuz expected to reopen for normal transit.

The negotiations were conducted under Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, following the death of his father on the first day of the war. Sharif acknowledged Khamenei’s wisdom during the difficult negotiations, which also involved diplomatic efforts from leaders in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and China. Pakistani officials have not provided further details on the agreement, but the path to this moment involved extensive diplomatic engagements, including a ceasefire initiated by Pakistan on April 8 and subsequent high-level talks in Islamabad.

Despite the announcement, uncertainties remain as Iranian officials indicated no immediate plans to sign the agreement, reflecting the complexities of the situation. Nonetheless, the mediation efforts by Pakistan have been recognized as a significant diplomatic achievement in the ongoing conflict.
