Arabic version: الشرطة تعتقل ستة أشخاص في تحقيق حول العبودية الحديثة في كرو
Six people have been arrested over serious allegations, including modern slavery, at a religious group in Cheshire. According to BBC News, more than 500 officers were involved in raids at three addresses linked to the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light (ARPOL) in Crewe, which was founded by followers of Shia Islam at the start of the century.
Cheshire Police reported that they were made aware last month of allegations of serious sexual offences, forced marriage, and modern slavery, which are said to have taken place in 2023. The group currently has 150 members, and the allegations relate to one woman who was a member at the time the offences were said to have taken place.
Of those arrested, four were male and two female, with their nationalities including American, Mexican, Italian, Spanish, and British. The police operation commenced at about 08:50 BST, leading to a large police presence, including vehicles and ambulances at King George V playing fields, with roads closed in the Victoria Avenue area, near Queens Park.
Cheshire East Council is working with police to ensure the safety and support of those displaced by the operation. Chief Superintendent Gareth Wrigley emphasized that the investigation focuses on the serious allegations reported, not the religious beliefs of the group. He reassured the public that there is no risk to the wider community and that police patrols have been stepped up for reassurance.
Wrigley highlighted the commitment to treating all reports of sexual assault seriously and urged anyone with information to come forward. The police will maintain a continued and significant presence in the area for ongoing searches and community reassurance.
