Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has announced an increase in patrols and vehicle checkpoints following a car bomb attack on a police station in Dunmurry, County Antrim. The explosion occurred on Saturday night after a delivery driver was forced to transport the bomb, which was detonated outside the station. According to BBC News, the New IRA claimed responsibility, stating that the attack aimed to kill police officers as they evacuated the area.

The vehicle used in the attack was hijacked at gunpoint in Twinbrook, west Belfast, shortly after 22:50 BST on Saturday. The PSNI has categorized the incident as an attempted murder, with Assistant Chief Constable Davy Beck expressing concerns about ongoing threats from dissident republican groups across Northern Ireland. Beck emphasized the importance of community support in ensuring safety for both residents and officers.

In a press conference, PSNI Chief Constable Jon Boutcher condemned the bombing as a “deliberate, reckless and stupid attack.” He praised the bravery of officers who acted quickly to evacuate local families, including those with young children. Boutcher labeled the perpetrators as “mindless idiots” and called for anyone with information to come forward.

Liam Kelly, chairman of the Police Federation for Northern Ireland, criticized the New IRA’s claim of responsibility, describing it as a pathetic attempt by “fascist thugs and cowards”. He urged political and civic leaders to publicly support police efforts and condemn such violent acts. The rise of dissident republican groups has raised concerns, as they operate independently of the Provisional IRA, which had declared a ceasefire in 2005.

The PSNI continues to prioritize the safety of the community while addressing the threats posed by these groups, reinforcing their commitment to protecting both citizens and their officers.
