Salva Kiir Mayardit on Wednesday presided over the swearing-in of Lt. Gen. James Koang Chuol as Governor of Upper Nile State at the State House, in a ceremony attended by senior government officials and military leaders.
During the ceremony, the President reiterated his call for peace, unity, and stability in Upper Nile State, stressing the urgent need to end ongoing violence and restore security across the region.
Governor Koang was appointed last week, replacing Jacob Dollar Ruot, who had earlier removed him from the position this year. President Kiir urged communities in Upper Nile to embrace reconciliation, emphasising that violence has never brought lasting peace.
Addressing the newly sworn-in leadership, the President tasked Governor Koang and his administration with forming an inclusive government that reflects all communities within the state. He also reaffirmed the national government’s continued support for the people of Upper Nile.
Local stakeholders and political leaders welcomed Governor Koang’s reappointment, expressing confidence in his ability to stabilise the state. They also called for greater accountability and proposed the organisation of a peace and reconciliation conference to address long-standing grievances.
