Queensland Health Minister Tim Nicholls has ordered an investigation into the health treatment of Richard Zoltan Babos, a 36-year-old man accused of a violent crime spree in Childers. According to ABC News, Babos faces multiple charges, including murder, following an alleged attack shortly after his release from a hospital emergency department.

Babos was taken to the Caboolture Hospital emergency department on the afternoon of May 25 under an emergency examination authority, which permits the involuntary assessment of individuals at risk of serious harm due to mental health reasons. He was discharged that evening and was not under the authority at the time of the alleged violent acts.

The investigation will focus on the assessment, treatment, and discharge processes related to Babos. Minister Nicholls has directed his director-general and the chief psychiatrist to conduct further inquiries to ensure compliance with clinical and legislative standards.

The violent spree resulted in the death of 78-year-old Lawrence Elliott, who was allegedly beaten to death with a metal pole. Babos is also charged with one count of murder, one of attempted murder, acts intended to maim/disfigure/disable, dangerous operation of a vehicle, and evasion, related to assaults on multiple individuals during the incident.

Babos is scheduled to appear in Bundaberg Magistrates Court for a hearing on August 25, following his initial appearance in Gladstone Magistrates Court. Police have established multiple crime scenes related to the events that unfolded in Childers, and none of the victims were known to Babos.
