According to ABC News, Queensland’s social housing waitlist stood at 44,294 people in July, down from 48,539 in October 2024, when the LNP came to office. The register had climbed over the following year and peaked at more than 59,000 people in November 2025.

Housing Minister Sam O’Connor said the government had halted the earlier increase and that the July figure was more than 20 per cent below the peak. He attributed the decline to a more actively managed list and more homes coming online, while acknowledging more work was needed.

O’Connor said the premier had set a target of delivering 53,500 social and community homes by 2044. He said that target had been modelled to meet current and future demand and was the measure that would allow the register to keep falling. He did not commit to a specific target for the number of people on the waitlist.

QShelter chief executive Fiona Caniglia said the register was not the only measure of housing need. She pointed to people described as the “missing middle”, who may struggle to retain a tenancy or enter the private rental market but do not qualify for social housing. QShelter is calling for defined targets for supportive housing and affordable housing, including homes with discounted market rents located near infrastructure and jobs.
