Remote patient monitoring technology is transforming healthcare for pregnant women in regional Victoria. The innovation, which allows patients to log their daily glucose levels via an app, is particularly beneficial for those managing gestational diabetes, as it reduces the need for frequent in-person appointments.
According to ABC News, Stefania Panella, who is expecting her first child, expressed relief at being able to monitor her condition without extensive travel. The system alleviates concerns related to missed work and childcare, especially with rising fuel costs.
Health professionals at Goulburn Valley Health have noted that the technology improves patient care by providing real-time data, which enhances the monitoring process. Nurse practitioner Tara Jones highlighted that this digital approach reduces the number of programs needed to manage patients and saves valuable time for healthcare teams.
The Hume Rural Health Alliance, which oversees 16 health services in northern Victoria, is also embracing this technology. Neelu Kaur, the chief information officer, emphasized the importance of expanding virtual care to optimize hospital resources and improve patient flow.
Despite these advancements, many regional health services still rely on paper records. The Victorian government budgeted $21.4 million in 2024 to support the planning and rollout of electronic medical records, aiming to enhance patient safety and streamline healthcare delivery across the region.
