Public swimming pools in remote communities of Western Australia are proving to be vital resources for promoting physical and mental wellbeing. According to ABC News, these pools serve as safe spaces for children and families, offering numerous health benefits.

Graeme Pollett, who has managed several pools in these isolated areas, reflects on his experiences in Balgo and Kalumburu, where he observed the significant impact of these facilities. “There’s very little else,” he said, emphasizing the importance of the pools in providing hygiene, social interaction, and mental health support to residents.

In Kalumburu, with a population of 400, the pool acts as an oasis where children can play safely under the supervision of their families. Parents appreciate the system that encourages school attendance, as children must show proof of school attendance to swim. This initiative helps keep children safe and engaged, particularly during the hot afternoons of the Kimberley region.

Pollett also noted that the presence of a public pool has been crucial in reducing the incidence of skin and infectious diseases in these communities. The pools help combat hygiene issues that arise from inadequate housing conditions. Studies have shown that regular swimming can lead to a significant decrease in skin conditions and infections among children, reinforcing the health benefits of these facilities.
