Republican leaders have moved to quash speculation about Mitch McConnell, the former Republican leader in the US Senate, following a backlash from former President Donald Trump’s supporters. The 84-year-old senator was hospitalized on 14 June, but details about his condition remain unclear. According to The Guardian, the lack of transparency has led to accusations of a cover-up, with some claiming that McConnell’s health issues may be more serious than publicly acknowledged.
John Thune, McConnell’s successor as Republican leader, attempted to calm concerns by revealing that he had a lengthy phone conversation with McConnell on Monday. Additionally, Senate Republican whip John Barrasso confirmed a lengthy discussion with McConnell about various topics, including Senate races and national security.
McConnell’s health has been under scrutiny for years, with past incidents including a fall that resulted in a concussion and a hospitalization earlier this year for flu-like symptoms. His office stated that he is receiving excellent care and is working with his staff during his recovery.
The secrecy surrounding McConnell’s hospitalization has fueled conspiracy theories, particularly among Trump supporters who view him as a rival. Some commentators have called for greater transparency, citing the Republican Party’s previous criticisms of President Biden’s health. As the Senate prepares to reconvene, the uncertainty surrounding McConnell’s ability to return poses challenges for the party, which holds a narrow 53-47 majority in the Senate.
