One of Australia’s largest pump and jump track for cyclists is set to be unveiled in Milperra.
Deepwater Pump Track Grand Opening
Wednesday 15 April, 9-11am
Corner of Maxwell Avenue and Henry Lawson Drive
The action-packed Deepwater Pump Track has been purpose-built by CBCity – in partnership with the NSW Government – for bicycles and scooters, complete with smooth rollers, flowing corners and multiple riding lines that will give riders endless hours of excitement.
With over 200m of track to conquer, this adrenaline-ready circuit includes dedicated sections for cyclists of all ages and experiences:
- A run for experienced riders with successive jumps, switch backs and tilted features
- A run for novices, with tabletops (flat surfaces) to enhance rider safety
- A run for junior riders and children, separate from the main track
CBCity has also upgraded the surrounding area with pedestrian paths, shelters, bike racks, seating areas, additional parking, amenities and plenty of green space.
The NSW Government provided $500,000 towards the project through its Places to Play program, which supports the delivery of adventurous community spaces.
The track is close to the M5 turnoff and existing cycling routes, as well as Kelso Sports fields and the newly built Deepwater Park Play Space.
Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek said the pump track has been designed to be safe and accessible for mini-riders and BMX enthusiasts alike.
“I am excited to officially open Deepwater Pump Track and revitalise this site for community recreation,” Mayor El-Hayek said.
“Whether you’re a seasoned pro or you have a little one wanting to learn new cycling skills, this bike lovers’ playground is a great place to stay active and to connect.
“Grab your bike or scooter, pop on a helmet and pads, and test out the track for yourself!”
Brett Barnes, Dirtz managing director, said:
“This is currently one of the biggest pump n’ jump tracks in the country and we’ve designed and built the track to make the appeal as wide as possible,” Brett said.
“By including different types and levels of jumps – tabletops, step ups, doubles – we’ve injected progression into the circuit which allows riders to start where they are comfortable and gradually move to bigger jumps.
“Council have done an excellent job creating a place that parents would also be happy to take their younger children and spend some family time.”
Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said:
“This is another example of NSW Government supporting the delivery of high-quality adventurous space that provide lasting community benefit.
“This project shows how we can make the most of an existing open space to deliver infrastructure that encourages the community to get outdoors, get active, and have fun.”
Member for East Hills Kylie Wilkinson said:
“The new track is amongst the largest in the country and can be used by cyclists, skaters, roller bladers and scooterist of all abilities.
“I look forward to seeing the local community make the most of the new pump track which is sure to encourage people of all ages to get active for years to come.”
Background information
During the 2021 COVID-19 lockdowns, Council identified a significant increase in unauthorised bike tracks throughout bushland and open space areas, identifying more than 20 informal tracks. This issue attracted petitions and strong community advocacy.
In November 2021, Council responded by undertaking a community survey to better understand demand and community interest in this type of facility. The survey was placed on public exhibition from 22 November 2021 to 14 January 2022.
Following positive survey results, and in line with a recommendation in Council’s Sports Facilities Strategic Plan to “complete a review to determine if there is a need to provide BMX or mountain biking facilities,” Council commenced a procurement process to engage a consultant to investigate potential locations and concept designs for a pump and jump track to cater to riders of all ages and skill levels.
After a thorough assessment, Deepwater Park in Milperra was selected as the preferred location for the pump and jump track.
This project is proudly funded by the NSW Government in association with the City of Canterbury Bankstown, as part of the Places to Play program.
