A faction from Rubkona County in Unity State has announced its support for the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-in-Opposition (SPLA-IO) interim chairman, Hon. Stephen Par Kuol.

The group, described as loyal to First Vice-President Dr Riek Machar, declared on Sunday that it will now operate under Par Kuol’s leadership as interim chairperson of the SPLM-IO in Juba. Members said the move reflects their assessment of the current state of the Revitalised Peace Agreement and the need to “safeguard” its implementation.

Speaking to Oz Arab Media, Ustaz Gatjok Deng said the decision was taken “to protect the peace deal,” calling the declaration a significant step towards stability. He added that local chiefs are part of the bloc and hope to use their influence to advocate for Dr Machar, whom they say has been under de facto house arrest. Deng stressed the group accepts responsibility for its actions, noting that “in politics, it’s normal for individuals to join the party that aligns with their interests.” He also recalled that many members have lived at UN protection sites since the outbreak of the 2013 conflict in South Sudan. Rubkona has long been regarded as an SPLM-IO stronghold in oil-rich Unity State.

Hon. Stephen Par Kuol, who serves as Minister for Peacebuilding in the Revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity, recently declared himself—and a small cohort—as the SPLA-IO’s interim leadership after authorities in Juba reportedly restricted Dr Machar’s movements following unrest in Nasir. In response, SPLM-IO Deputy Chairman Hon. Oyet Nathaniel Pierino announced Par Kuol’s suspension from the party and rejected any attempt to replace Dr Machar.

The developments underscore ongoing tensions within the SPLM-IO over leadership and the direction of the peace process.
