Several schools across England are adjusting their opening times on Monday morning to accommodate families watching the World Cup match between England and Mexico. The match is scheduled to start at 01:00 BST, and some schools, including those in London, Salford, the Midlands, and County Durham, will open at around 10:00 to alleviate pressure on parents and children.

According to BBC News, headteachers argue that a later start allows families to enjoy the game without the stress of an early morning. Hill Avenue Academy in Wolverhampton is one of the schools adopting this policy, having implemented late openings for all of England’s late-night matches so far. Headteacher Daniel Steventon emphasized the importance of fostering enthusiasm for the national team and noted positive feedback from parents.

Parents like Kelly Wall have welcomed the changes, stating that the later openings have allowed for quality family time during the World Cup. Wall shared that the excitement around the matches has positively influenced her children, enabling them to engage more with the sport.

However, not all parents agree with the late openings, with some expressing concerns on social media about the impact on school attendance. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has stated that while she respects schools’ decisions, it is crucial for students to be present in class on Monday.

While some schools are choosing to open later, others plan to celebrate the World Cup in different ways, such as showing match highlights or organizing themed activities. As England aims for success in the tournament, schools are finding various methods to balance educational responsibilities with the excitement of the World Cup.
