According to ABC News, Selwyn Snow Resort has closed for 2026 after what it described as a challenging winter marked by limited snow cover. The NSW alpine resort ended its season with eight days of winter remaining, two weeks earlier than it finished in 2025.

General manager Abi Spackman said recent rain and warmer temperatures had reduced cover at Selwyn. She said the decision to close was hard, with the resort hoping for more snow-making temperatures and natural snowfall. Although piles of snow were ready to be pushed out, she said the resort was “too far gone.”

Ms Spackman said the NSW alps had experienced their warmest June in decades, affecting the whole season. She said operators had hoped winter was simply late, but described it as a bad season and said more resorts could be forced to finish early. Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort in Victoria has also said it will wrap up operations on Monday.

Perisher, Thredbo and Charlotte Pass remain open in the NSW alps, though snow cover is significantly lower than in 2025. Spencers Creek most recently recorded 90 centimetres of snow, compared with 158 centimetres at the same time last year. Perisher was still busy with visitors over the weekend.

Mountainwatch.com editor Reggae Ellis said a warm front forecast for Tuesday could bring more rain to the alps. He said higher elevations above 1,700 metres still had substantial natural cover, while lower snow pack could be affected. Snowmaking machines were helping maintain runs, he said, but cool temperatures would be needed for resorts to continue operating into spring.
