Arabic version: تأجيل الحكم على دانيال بيلينغز في قضية مولي تايسهارست
The sentencing of Daniel Billings for the domestic violence murder of childcare worker Molly Ticehurst has been delayed until September. This delay follows the submission of psychiatric evidence indicating that Billings was mentally impaired at the time of the crime.
According to ABC News, Billings pleaded guilty in November to murdering Ms Ticehurst in April 2024 at her home in Forbes, New South Wales. He was previously on bail facing multiple domestic violence charges against Ticehurst, including rape, stalking, and intimidation.
During a hearing in the NSW Supreme Court, Billings’ defense presented a report from a forensic psychiatrist claiming he suffered from a severe form of depression that impaired his mental state during the murder. If the court finds this impairment substantial, it may lead to a reduction of the charges against him to manslaughter.
Crown prosecutor Lee Carr SC requested the delay to allow for an independent psychiatric evaluation of Billings. However, Billings has declined to meet with another psychiatrist, necessitating reliance on over 1,000 pages of medical records for the assessment. The court has scheduled the next hearing for August, with the rescheduled sentencing set for early September.
