Arabic version: تم قطع مسيرة سيرينا ويليامز في الزوجي بسبب إصابة شريكتها
Serena Williams’ doubles campaign at Queen’s has been curtailed as her playing partner, Victoria Mboko, has withdrawn with a left knee injury. The 19-year-old Canadian suffered a nasty fall during her singles match on Wednesday, which forced her to retire from the contest against Karolina Pliskova.
According to BBC News, Mboko was trailing 6-2, 3-4 when she cried out in pain and left the court in tears. This unfortunate turn of events means that Leylah Fernandez and Germany’s Laura Siegemund will advance to the semi-finals, having been set to face Williams and Mboko.
Williams, who returned to competitive tennis after nearly four years, had previously showcased her skills with a victory on Tuesday alongside Mboko. The duo defeated the third seeds Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez in straight sets, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.
Despite her Queen’s campaign concluding early, Williams has plans to continue her comeback. Reports indicate that she will compete in doubles at the Berlin tournament next week, teaming up with Czech player Karolina Muchova, the world number 10. Additionally, Williams has expressed interest in playing doubles at Wimbledon, which begins on June 29, while leaving the door open for a potential return to singles competition in the future.
