Arabic version: زيادة اتهامات سوء السلوك الجسيم ضد شرطة تسمانيا
Allegations of serious misconduct against Tasmania Police officers have more than doubled in recent years, with reports indicating a rise from 13 in 2023 to 34 in 2025. This increase encompasses both internal and external complaints, which include severe allegations such as family violence, strangulation, and possession of child exploitation material. According to ABC News, the total number of complaints reached 514 last year, highlighting significant concerns about police conduct.
The data, categorized from Level 1 to Level 3 based on severity, shows that Level 3 complaints—those involving potential criminal behavior—have surged to their highest levels since reporting began in 2023. In 2025, 15 complaints were made by the public, while 19 were raised internally, marking a concerning trend for the police force.
The report also noted that a former officer is currently under criminal investigation due to allegations of child exploitation raised internally. Other serious complaints led to terminations and resignations, underscoring the impacts of these allegations on personnel within the force. For instance, one officer was terminated following a violence-related allegation, while another resigned after being convicted of family violence.
Deputy Commissioner Jonathan Higgins emphasized the importance of accountability within the police force, stating that all complaints must be appropriately addressed to maintain community confidence. The Tasmania Police Association expressed satisfaction with the complaints process but acknowledged the need for continued improvements to ensure fairness and adequate resources.
In addition to current allegations, Tasmania Police provided updates on historical abuse cases involving seven officers referred for investigation following a review of past conduct. Some of these cases have led to arrests and charges, while others have been deemed unsuitable for prosecution, reflecting ongoing challenges in addressing misconduct within the force.
