Arabic version: صدمة بين الأصدقاء بعد اتهامات الإرهاب لجايسون جوزيف مايكلز
Jayson Joseph Michaels is charged with terrorism offences related to an alleged plot for a “mass casualty” attack in Perth. The news has left his former school friends in disbelief. According to ABC News, one friend, Alex, described Michaels as a typical teenage boy who was slightly edgy and outgoing, but never showed signs of such alarming behavior.
Police investigations suggest that Michaels used the encrypted messaging app Telegram to express hateful ideologies, leading to a raid on his home in Bindoon where a manifesto outlining plans for an ideologically motivated attack of violent extremism involving mass casualties was discovered. Allegations indicate that he had been plotting attacks on public buildings, including police headquarters, parliament, and mosques.
Alex recalled that Michaels dropped out of St Stephens School in Perth by the end of year 10, stating he wasn’t particularly engaged in school. Their friendship had faded over the years, particularly after Michaels began to focus on his Christian faith, which Alex felt distanced him from their previous interests.
The Joint Counter Terrorism Team of WA confirmed that they had been investigating Michaels’ online activity. Extremism expert Ben Rich noted that online radicalization is a growing concern, particularly for young men who may feel isolated. He emphasized the need for better support systems to prevent such incidents in the future.
