A shooting incident near the White House resulted in the death of the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best, following an exchange of gunfire with Secret Service agents on Saturday evening. The suspect, who had a documented history of mental health problems and was known to the Secret Service, initiated the attack shortly before 18:00 (23:00 GMT) by firing between 10 and 20 shots in the vicinity of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW.
According to BBC News, one bystander was also wounded during the incident and has since been taken to the hospital, although further details about their condition have not been disclosed. Fortunately, no Secret Service officers were injured in the confrontation.
The shooting occurred in a busy area close to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, prompting immediate road closures and a lockdown of the White House press briefing room. Reporters present at the scene described the chaos as gunshots rang out, leading them to take cover and seek safety inside the building.
President Donald Trump was in residence at the White House during the shooting and has been briefed on the events, but has not yet commented publicly on the incident. The Secret Service has confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and the area will remain secured as authorities continue to gather information about the shooting.
This incident follows a recent gunfire event at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, highlighting ongoing security concerns in the area. The Secret Service’s quick response prevented further escalation, but the situation has raised questions about security protocols and the safety of high-profile locations in the nation’s capital.
