Seventeen-year-old Sienna Toohey has secured a spot on the Australian Commonwealth Games swimming team after winning the 100m breaststroke. Toohey’s victory came during the Australian Swimming Trials held in Sydney, where she clocked a time of 1:05.97, marking her as the third fastest Australian woman in this event.
According to ABC News, Toohey’s achievement is particularly significant given her recent move from Albury in Western Australia to Canberra. Despite feeling isolated in her new environment, the success of making the Commonwealth Games team has made the transition worthwhile for her.
In the trials, Toohey outpaced Ella Ramsay, who finished second with a time of 1:06.70. Ramsay, already qualified for the Glasgow Games in the 200m individual medley, is expected to compete in the 100m breaststroke as well. Toohey’s win adds to her streak of victories over Ramsay in major national competitions, including last year’s world championship trials.
Toohey expressed her happiness at breaking the 1:06 barrier for the first time, a milestone she had discussed with her coach Shannon Rollason prior to the race. Meanwhile, fellow swimmer Kaylee McKeown continued to excel despite facing health challenges, securing her place in the 100m backstroke for the Commonwealth Games, set to take place from July 24 to 29 in Glasgow.
