Jannik Sinner will defend his Wimbledon crown against Alexander Zverev in a final that pits two of the tour’s most in-form players against each other. The 24-year-old world number one is aiming to become only the 10th man in the Open era to retain the men’s singles title at the All England Club after beating Carlos Alcaraz to lift the trophy last summer.

According to BBC News, Sinner has won each of his past nine meetings with Zverev and the past six without dropping a set. But Sinner has expressed caution about the German, saying: “Whatever happened in the past between me and him, it happened. In between, he won a Grand Slam in Paris, which gave him a lot of confidence.” Zverev claimed his maiden major at Roland Garros last month and said winning a first major has given him the belief to seek more.

The match matters because both players have set the season’s benchmark for consistency and form. They are the only two to have won 40 or more matches in 2026, Zverev will rise to world number two on Monday, and Sinner is pursuing a fifth major after producing a straight-sets win over Novak Djokovic in Friday’s semi-final. Sinner has reached seven Grand Slam finals since the start of the 2024 season and leads the tour for most singles titles in 2026 after capturing all five Masters 1000 events.

Their styles and statistics underline how finely balanced the final could be. Both have won more than 90% of their service games this fortnight; Sinner has won 85% of points on his first serve and has 113 aces compared to Zverev’s 87. Zverev’s serve quality is rated higher (9.2 to Sinner’s 8.7) and he has recorded the highest average speeds on both his first and second serves at these Championships, but Sinner has superior return metrics (overall return quality 8.1 to Zverev’s 7.3) and slightly higher forehand and backhand quality ratings.

What happens next: they meet in Sunday’s final. Zverev will seek to become the first man in the Open era to win a second major immediately after his first and could become only the fourth player in the Open era to capture their first tour-level title at Wimbledon, while Sinner will attempt to hold the title he won last year.
