Rockhampton sisters have raised $70,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation in memory of their beloved mother, Christine Gray. This annual fundraiser, held around Mother’s Day, has become a cherished tradition for the family, who have now been without Christine for six years.
According to ABC News, Christine was diagnosed in 2018 with multiple myeloma, a rare form of blood cancer. After enduring two years of rigorous treatment, she passed away from an infection that led to sepsis in 2020. The family has since dedicated themselves to raising funds to support others affected by blood cancer.
The event, known as “Memories of Mum,” began in the backyard of one of the sisters with just 30 attendees. It has since transformed into a black-tie occasion, attracting more participants each year. This year, the family hosted two events: one in Rockhampton and another in Tamborine on the Gold Coast.
The sisters emphasize that the fundraiser is not solely about the money, but rather about celebrating mothers who are no longer with them and honoring those who are still present. They have raised a total of $70,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation, with nearly $50,000 coming specifically from the Memories of Mum events.
Funds raised contribute to various support services, including accommodation for families needing to be close to treatment and financial assistance. The Leukaemia Foundation reports that over 170,000 Australians live with blood cancer, highlighting the importance of ongoing research and support. The sisters continue to cherish their mother’s memory, keeping her spirit alive through their efforts and family traditions.
