Arabic version: مابيل يرفض مزاعم الثقافة الأحادية بعد خروج منتخب السوكيروز من كأس العالم
Socceroos star Awer Mabil has dismissed claims surrounding Australia’s multicultural identity, labeling the monoculture debate as “bullshit.” His comments came upon the team’s return to Adelaide following their defeat to Egypt in the round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. According to ABC News, the discussion was ignited by One Nation leader Pauline Hanson, who suggested that the Socceroos embodied her vision of a monoculture.
Mabil expressed that the notion of Australia lacking a successful multicultural society is unfounded. He emphasized that the team remained focused on representing Australia on an international platform, regardless of external commentary. “When somebody tried to divide people based on certain things, because you don’t pick where you’re born, the colour of your skin,” he stated, underscoring the importance of unity and good human values.
The debate intensified after Senator Hanson declared in a speech at the National Press Club in June that while Australia is a multiracial society, it cannot be a multicultural one. She criticized high migration rates for threatening the country’s identity and advocated for a shift towards a monoculture. This perspective faced significant backlash from various political figures, including both Labor and Liberal MPs.
Hanson had previously stated that the Socceroos represented her ideal vision of an Australian monoculture, claiming that players from diverse backgrounds unite under one flag and adhere to the same rules. However, Mabil maintained that such comments did not distract the team from their mission at the World Cup. “If anyone is trying to divide that, then they’re probably not Australian themselves in a sense, respectfully,” he remarked, reinforcing the team’s commitment to inclusivity and representation.
