Somaliland has marked its first year of independence following recognition by Israel on May 18, 2026. Thousands gathered in the capital, Hargeisa, for military parades and traditional dances, marking a significant moment in the region’s quest for international acknowledgment. According to Al Jazeera, this recognition by Israel is the first of its kind since Somaliland declared autonomy from Somalia in 1991.

During the celebrations, President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi addressed the crowd, emphasizing Somaliland’s commitment to being a peaceful and democratic nation. He stated, “The question Somaliland asks the world is no longer whether we deserve recognition, but when.”

However, the recognition has sparked mixed feelings among Somaliland’s population. While some residents have embraced the new relationship with Israel, displaying Israeli flags in their homes, others view the alliance with deep suspicion, especially as Israel continues its war on Gaza.

Local activists reported that protests against the alliance have led to arrests, including of religious scholars and young men demonstrating with Palestinian flags. Concerns also persist regarding the territorial disputes with the newly formed North East State of Somalia, where clashes have occurred, resulting in significant casualties and displacements.

Despite the enthusiasm in Hargeisa, fears linger about potential repercussions from regional actors, notably Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who have threatened to retaliate against Somaliland due to its ties with Israel. The situation remains complex as Somaliland seeks broader international recognition while navigating internal and external pressures.
