A South Carolina court has overturned the 2023 murder convictions of Alex Murdaugh, a disgraced lawyer who was convicted of killing his wife and son. The state’s supreme court on Wednesday ordered a new trial for Murdaugh over the June 2021 killings.

According to BBC News, Murdaugh has been in prison serving two life sentences for the murders of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh and an additional 40 years for federal financial crimes. His case has captured global attention, leading to various documentaries and podcasts.

The court’s unanimous 5-0 ruling stated that the local county clerk, Rebecca Hill, improperly influenced the jury. Comments made by Hill during the trial led justices to conclude that Murdaugh was denied a fair trial by an impartial jury. Hill previously pleaded guilty to misconduct in office, which included sharing sealed court information.

Jurors reported that Hill made comments suggesting they should closely monitor Murdaugh and indicated that their deliberations should not take long. This alleged jury tampering was central to the decision to grant a new trial. Furthermore, the justices noted that too much evidence from Murdaugh’s financial crimes case was improperly admitted during the murder trial, risking unfair prejudice.

The original trial, which lasted six weeks, ended with Murdaugh’s conviction for the murders, which occurred in June 2021. The new ruling does not address his financial crimes case, which remains separate. Murdaugh has consistently maintained his innocence regarding the murder charges.
