According to Cnbc, South Korean Finance Minister Lee Hyoung-Il said the semiconductor boom will last at least through 2027. Speaking on the sidelines of the IMF-World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, Lee said the country’s view is that growth can be sustained through next year because the gap between semiconductor demand and supply remains wide.
Lee said supply is still being expanded even as demand exceeds available capacity. His assessment followed a sharp fall in semiconductor stocks during the week, as investors weighed concerns about interest rate hikes and rising competition from Chinese companies. South Korean chip shares including SK Hynix and Seoul Semiconductor joined the sell-off, alongside U.S. companies such as Nvidia.
Semiconductor stocks have driven volatility in South Korea’s stock market this year, Lee said. He linked the market’s sharp swings to the chip industry’s comparatively large share of the South Korean economy. Despite that volatility, he described the country’s economy as “solid.”
The chip boom has also supported tax growth, Lee said. South Korea expects to collect more tax revenue than initially projected this year and will ultimately be in a stronger fiscal position because of the industry’s expansion, he added. Separately, an opinion column in Maeil Business Newspaper urged the government to prepare for a possible slowdown in the artificial intelligence boom, citing expectations from two experts of a flood of new semiconductor supply that could turn the memory market into a “red ocean” by 2029.
