South Sudan’s Council of Ministers has approved a budget allocation to support the country’s national football and basketball teams as they prepare for upcoming international competitions in Tanzania, Dakar and other regional venues.
The Council directed the relevant sports institutions to coordinate with the Ministry of Finance to ensure the approved funding is processed and released in time for the teams’ preparations and participation.
The meeting, chaired by President Salva Kiir Mayardit, highlighted the importance of strengthening the sports sector across the country. Ministers noted that sport plays a vital role in promoting national unity, peace and social cohesion, while also providing young South Sudanese athletes with opportunities to represent their country on the international stage.
Particular attention was given to the national basketball team, which has gained international recognition in recent years through its strong performances in African competitions and on the global stage. The team’s achievements have helped place South Sudan firmly on the international basketball map and inspired a new generation of young athletes across the country.
The upcoming competitions are expected to bring together leading African teams as they compete for qualification opportunities in major international tournaments, including the 2027 Basketball World Cup.
Friday’s Council meeting was attended by the Minister for Youth and Sports, Aton Kuol Manyang Juuk. The discussions reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investing in sport as a tool for development, unity and peace-building across South Sudan.
