South Sudan’s Council of Ministers has approved a reform proposal presented by the Minister of Energy and Dams, Hon. Gok, during a cabinet meeting chaired by President Salva Kiir on Friday.
The reforms focus on the energy and transport sectors, which are considered central to strengthening the country’s economy and supporting recovery from ongoing financial challenges.
During the meeting, cabinet members highlighted the importance of embracing modern development, upgrading energy infrastructure and strengthening financial systems. The council stressed that South Sudan must modernise its energy facilities and adopt technology-driven infrastructure that can support long-term national growth.
Since gaining independence from Sudan in 2011, South Sudan has relied heavily on imported fuel and generator-based electricity, which provides limited and expensive power supply. However, the country has significant water resources that could support the development of hydroelectric power projects and help generate locally produced electricity.
The cabinet’s approval is seen as an important step towards improving essential infrastructure and demonstrating the government’s commitment to national development despite ongoing economic pressures.
Meanwhile, President Kiir visited the State House construction site on Sunday, where he inspected several sections of the project and received briefings from engineers overseeing the work.
The visit reflected the government’s stated commitment to delivering improved public infrastructure and services as South Sudan prepares for the general elections scheduled for December 2026.
