President Salva Kiir of South Sudan recently called for peace following his return from Tanzania, where he assumed the role of Chair of the East African Community (EAC). Addressing a gathering at Juba International Airport on Saturday, President Kiir emphasized the importance of peace for the nation as he begins his tenure leading the EAC. This marks a significant milestone for South Sudan, the youngest nation in Africa, as it takes the helm of the bloc for the first time since joining the EAC in 2016. President Kiir officially took the oath in Arusha, Tanzania, during the regional summit.

With the recent inclusion of Somalia, the EAC now comprises eight member states. South Sudan, succeeding Burundi in this leadership position, faces challenges including Somalia’s devastating floods, regional economic downturns, security issues, and trade disputes. As the new EAC Chair, President Kiir aims to implement effective policies to strengthen the community, facilitate trade, and promote movement between these nations, aiming to fulfill the EAC’s objectives.

Dr. Riek Machar, South Sudan’s First Vice President, highlighted the significance of this leadership role for the country. He expressed optimism about the potential for improved freedom and movement among the citizens of the eight sovereign member countries.
