Artist Stacey Bennett is documenting often-overlooked lives in her new project, Lesbians of Australia. According to ABC News, Bennett aims to create a significant archive celebrating the diversity and resilience of queer communities across Australia.

Having come out at 14, Bennett felt alone due to the lack of lesbian role models. Now, as a portrait artist based in Geelong, Victoria, she is determined to ensure that future generations of LGBTQ+ individuals do not feel the same sense of loneliness. Through her series, she has painted portraits of 100 lesbians from across Australia, showcasing their unique stories and experiences.

Bennett’s project started with a simple artistic idea but grew into a comprehensive archive of lesbian lives. She emphasizes the importance of visibility and connection within the community. By conducting in-depth conversations with her subjects before painting them, Bennett captures their essence and authenticity, aiming to reflect the complexities of their identities and experiences.

Among the portraits, Bennett highlights the story of Cecily, an 83-year-old woman whose reflections on love and loss deeply moved her. Cecily shared memories of her long-term partner, Margaret, and the challenges they faced together. Bennett also met diverse voices like Tiarnie, a 24-year-old Kamilaroi and Murrawarri woman navigating her identity as both a lesbian and Indigenous person.

After nearly two years of work, Bennett hopes her collection serves as both a historical record and a source of connection for the LGBTQ+ community, celebrating the rich tapestry of lesbian lives across Australia.
