According to ABC News, Mitchell Starc and Shoriful Islam delivered decisive left-arm bowling performances on day one of the second Test between Australia and Bangladesh in Mackay. Starc tore through Bangladesh’s top order, while Shoriful made an immediate impact after returning from a side strain.

Starc struck with the first ball of the match when Shadman Islam sent a leading edge to Cameron Green at gully. It was the fourth time Starc had dismissed a batter with the first delivery of a Test. He then removed Tanzid and Shanto with the first two balls of his second over, before dismissing Mominul and Litton Das to complete five wickets in 22 balls.

The left-armer finished his six-over spell with 5-5, including four maidens, as Bangladesh fell to 5-15. The haul was the sixth fastest five-wicket return in Test history, although Starc’s fastest came in 15 balls against the West Indies last year. Bangladesh were later bundled out for 64.

Australia’s reply included a short return for Matt Renshaw, who was dismissed for 8 after edging to the slips. Renshaw, the leading First Class run scorer at Harrup Park and the only player to make two Sheffield Shield centuries in Mackay, had entered the match following a domestic summer in which he made three red-ball centuries.

Shoriful, 25, claimed his first Test wicket in Australia two deliveries after entering the attack, with Travis Head chopping on. Three balls later, Marnus Labuschagne was dismissed when the ball rolled onto the stumps after hitting his thigh pad. Shoriful also removed Steve Smith for 42 lbw, then dismissed Beau Webster and Pat Cummins for ducks and Starc for 1.
