The Queensland state government has stepped in to take over the decision-making process for a controversial quarry proposal in Reedy Creek, Gold Coast. State Planning Minister Jarrod Bleijie will exercise special decision-making powers, determining the fate of the application originally submitted by Boral, a major building materials company.

According to ABC News, the proposal has attracted significant public opposition, with more than 2,900 submissions received from concerned residents. The state government’s intervention means that the Gold Coast City Council will not debate the development application before a decision is made.

Boral, which operates over 300 sites across Australia, proposed the quarry as a necessary resource to support construction needs on the Gold Coast, especially as the existing quarry at West Burleigh approaches end-of-life. However, local LNP MPs and community members have expressed strong opposition, citing potential impacts on the environment and quality of life.

Minister Bleijie emphasized the importance of considering both the merits and impacts of the project, aiming to provide clarity for residents. The decision is expected to be made within 30 business days.

Local councillor Glenn Tozer remarked that the state government’s call-in decision would prevent any future appeals in the Planning and Environment Court, making the minister’s ruling final. The outcome remains highly anticipated as the community continues to voice its concerns regarding the proposal.
