Arabic version: اقتراح مجلس ستراثفيلد لإعادة تسمية هومبوش يواجه رد فعل محلي
Strathfield Council’s proposal to rename parts of Homebush has sparked significant local criticism, with many residents accusing the council of pursuing ‘snob value.’ According to ABC News, the plan aims to rename all of Homebush and Homebush West south of the railway line to Strathfield, impacting hundreds of properties.
The council argues that the name change will alleviate confusion regarding the suburb’s location, particularly due to its proximity to the well-known Sydney Olympic Park. Strathfield Deputy Mayor Jean-Paul Baladi noted that residents south of the rail line wish to distance themselves from the area north of the line, which is associated with the Olympic events and local markets.
However, feedback from locals reveals a divide on the issue. Some residents, like Michelle Sharkey, have expressed strong opposition, stating, “I don’t want to be called Strathfield.” Others, including Robyn Pogmore, have voiced skepticism, suggesting the renaming is primarily aimed at increasing property values, which they believe the name Strathfield carries.
While some see potential benefits, such as increased property values due to Strathfield’s higher market status, others worry that the change could dilute the unique identity of Homebush. The council’s proposal is open for public feedback until May 17, but any final decision will rest with the NSW Geographical Names Board, which will conduct its assessment and community consultations before making a ruling.
