Two Sydney teal independent MPs have launched a new centrist political party named Community Strong Australia, aiming to secure seats in the Senate. The announcement, made on June 25, 2026, marks a significant development in Australian politics, particularly for the so-called teal movement.

According to ABC News, the MPs, Zali Steggall and Allegra Spender, stated that the party will operate without a designated leader for the time being, functioning instead like a sports team where members can vote freely on issues. They indicated that a formal leadership structure might be considered as the party grows.

Steggall emphasized the need for the party to be built from the ground up and did not dismiss the possibility of accepting donations from wealthy individuals, such as billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes. She criticized existing political donation laws, claiming they disadvantage community-based initiatives compared to major parties.

The Community Strong party will prioritize sensible economic management, climate action, integrity, and equality, which Steggall and Spender described as the core pillars of their platform. The MPs expressed their intention to provide a political home for Australians who feel politically homeless, focusing on pragmatic solutions rather than ideology.
