A teenager linked to an Islamic State (IS) terrorist network has walked free on probation after pleading guilty to a brutal snuff-video-style gay bashing. The incident, which involved filming a violent assault, has raised serious concerns about the legal response to hate crimes in Australia.

According to ABC News, Nathan*, 20, was left for dead in a Sydney underpass by a 17-year-old who filmed himself repeatedly stomping on Nathan’s head and shared the 40-second video on social media. Nathan suffered multiple injuries, including a broken nose and eye socket, deep facial cuts, and a permanently deviated septum, after being lured to a meeting under false pretenses through the dating app Grindr.

Despite the severity of the assault, the attacker received a nine-month probation sentence with no conviction recorded, after pleading guilty to aggravated robbery. Advocates have criticized this lenient punishment, arguing it sends a troubling message about the seriousness of anti-LGBTQIA+ violence.

Police reports indicate that a wave of similar hate crimes has occurred in Sydney, with at least 64 individuals charged in New South Wales and Victoria since 2023. Many of these incidents involve victims lured through dating apps and subjected to violence and humiliation. The attacks have been linked to a resurgence of extremist ideologies among youth.

In response to the growing concerns, NSW Premier Chris Minns has announced urgent legislation aimed at increasing penalties for anti-LGBTQIA+ violence. Advocates are calling for the establishment of specific hate crime laws to better protect LGBTQIA+ individuals in Australia.
