Three teenage mariachi musicians, the Gámez-Cuéllar brothers, will open for country singer Kacey Musgraves at several shows in Texas from May 3 to May 5. According to The Guardian, the performances are part of Musgraves’ Middle of Nowhere tour, coinciding with the Cinco de Mayo holiday.

The brothers, Antonio (18), Caleb (14), and Joshua (12), were detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in February alongside their parents. Their detention sparked bipartisan backlash, leading to their release in March. They had been held at a family detention center in Dilley, Texas, while Antonio was separated and placed in an adult facility.

The family’s case gained national attention after the brothers’ high school mariachi ensemble won a state competition in Texas, prompting recognition from their congressional representative, Monica De La Cruz. Their father, Luis Antonio Martínez, stated that they entered the U.S. in 2023 seeking asylum from cartel threats in the Mexican state of San Luis Potosí.

Musgraves expressed her excitement about the brothers joining her tour on social media, celebrating their release and the opportunity for them to perform at Gruene Hall, a historic venue in Texas.
